Installation Issues
How do I upgrade or install the client?
You will need administrative permissions to your computer. https://websiterenew400.weebly.com/blog/mac-java-download-107. Contact your Local IT Support Provider if you do not have administrative access to your computer.
- Using add/remove programs on your OS, uninstall all instances of Juniper/Pulse Secure clients (Network Connect / Junos Pulse / Pulse Secure).
- Download the correct client from Pulse Secure download page.
- Once the client has finished installing, reboot the machine.
- After the machine has booted back up, follow the appropriate setup instructions and attempt to connect.
- For Windows, see here.
- For Mac, see here.
I tried to install the client but received an access or privilege error.
Juniper Pulse Secure Client
Initial installation must be performed by someone with administrative privileges on the machine. If you do not have administrative access to your computer, consult your Local IT Support Provider.
macOS stand-alone client installation fails with 'Unidentified Developer' error.
This issue is caused by Pulse Secure Client installer certificates not being recognized by Finder. This issue has been solved in Pulse Secure 5.1R5.1 for macOS. Go to the download page to download and install the recent client.
On a Mac platform, I am unable to upgrade to Pulse Secure (or unable to upgrade from Network Connect to Pulse, or connect after upgrade).
!!! This solution should be executed ONLY by computer support staff (LSP's, LAN Admins) who are familiar with the OSX command line. Errors on the command line can severly disrupt your system. !!!
- Open the command line / command prompt and execute the following commands:
sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Application Support/Juniper Networks/SetupClient
sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Application Support/Juniper - If you see the following files, try removing them:
~/Library/Application Support/Juniper Networks/tncc.jar
~/Library/Application Support/Juniper Networks
~/Library/Logs/Juniper Networks - Ensure Java plug in is enabled on the Mac.
- After all the above steps are complete, reboot the Mac, install the client, and attempt to connect.

I received the following:
ERROR: Exceeded maximum users for this authentication realm.
Verify the connection URL in your Pulse Secure client is set for 'vpn.vanderbilt.edu'. The following URLs are no longer supported and need to be removed: vpn.ea.vanderbilt.edu and vpn.mc.vanderbilt.edu. If the connection URL is different, please do the following:
- Delete the connection by highlighting it on the Pulse Secure Client and clicking the 'X' in the top right corner.
- Create a new connection by clicking the '+' in the top right corner.
- Fill in the 'name' field with 'Enterprise SSL VPN', and the URL with 'vpn.vanderbilt.edu'.
- Click the 'Add' button, highlight the new connection, and click Connect.
On a Mac, the SSL VPN Client will work sporadically.
Ensure the Mac feature 'Back to my Mac' is disabled as it causes conflicts with the client's operating port. Once disabled, restart the client.
Library research materials, such as journal subscriptions, are unavailable when attempting to access while off campus via SSL VPN.

General Info
VPN sessions now require Duo Two-step logins. Please make sure you have Duo Two-step service enabled on your HawkID account. During the login process you will be prompted for a 'Secondary password'. See this page for information on what to enter there (note that page is for the Cisco AnyConnect client, but the 'Second password' field works the same way on the Pulse client).
